The Scarlet Ibis Writing Piece.
Too Much Pride
“You have to decide what’s most important to you, keeping your pride and getting nothing or taking a risk and maybe having everything.” In the story “The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst the narrator is embarrassed because his brother isn’t able to walk so he teaches him along with other actions that most kids who don’t have a disability can do. The narrator pushes his brother a little too far and he pays the ultimate price. The narrator's feelings change for his brother and ends up loving him. Never let pride or selfishness get in the way of loved ones because it only causes more problems.
The narrator has too much pride and is embarrassed. His brother can’t walk that he forgets the true meaning of love. For example “When Doodle was five years old, I was embarrassed at having a brother of that age who couldn’t walk, so I set out to teach him.” This shows that he isn’t teaching his brother how to walk not out of love but of embarrassment. He wants his brother to walk so he he isn’t made fun of that he forgets he is human too. Another example is "They did not know that I did it for myself, that pride, whose slave I was, spoke to me louder that all their voices, and that Doodle walked only because I was ashamed of having a crippled brother". He is only teaching Doodle to walk because he is trying to keep his reputation and school so he isn’t made fun of. This also shows that his pride gets in the way of his love for his brother. The narrator has too much pride and is embarrassed to have a crippled brother.
The narrator in the story has too much pride throughout the story he loves him even though it doesn’t seem like it. ” Finally one day, after many weeks of practicing, he stood alone for a few seconds. When he fell I grabbed him in my arms and hugged him.” This shows in that moment when he stood up he knew he loved him and knew he would able to walk. This also shows that he loves him enough to teach him how to walk for hours every day and weeks so he can walk even if it was out of embarrassment. “ I began to weep, and the tear blurred vision in red before me looked very familiar.” This shows that when Doodle died he showed how much he loved him and he knew that pride took over him. This also shows that he knew he had feelings for Doodle and when he died he knew he was being selfish. Throughout the story the narrator had mixed emotions for Doodle and at sometimes it seemed like he didn’t love him but he shows he does.
Too much pride can ruin relationships. The narrator has too much pride through most of the story. The narrator loves Doodle but through most of the story he doesn't show it. Too much pride can't do anything for you and you can forget about love when you have too much pride.
I think for this writing piece I got 2 for my score. I didn't do too well because I repeated some things and I don't think I did well on explaining my quotes and what they meant. My goal is to get to at least a 3-4 writing score.

What I've learned About writing through the semester.
I've learned a lot in this semester. I learned to format a writing piece about character development and how to write a formal essay. I know about in essays on literature I should always use present tense. I also know how to structure my essays. I learned how to write a script for a Greek tragedy. Even though our script wasn't chosen I learned a lot about writing them and putting in detail about characters and places they are in. I have approved on my writing a little bit through the year. I also improved on making props for plays because that was my job for the play project(Even though it isn't about writing). My goals for next year are to get better at writing better essays. I know how to write essays but when I write them they aren't the best.
